Reading Increases Your College Admissions Chances

Post By: COYD Staff

Magazines, online articles, books, textbooks…etc. So many things to read, yet such a small number of Americans actually read. For a high school student trying to get into the college of their dreams, it is imperative that you read. Below are specific ways reading helps you get into college, if you need convincing! 🙂

1. Increases your vocabulary: Helps to increase your SAT score.

2. Improves writing skills: Helps your essay writing.

3. Improves memory: Helps your GPA and SAT score.

4. Improves analytical thinking: Helps your GPA, SAT and essay writing.

5. Make you more aware of the world, different perspectives, and different cultures: Colleges look for students who are inquisitive and know who they are and what they believe in. If you don’t know what’s out there, it’s hard to formulate why you do what you do and why you believe what you believe.

In order to maximize the benefits of reading, below are a few tips:

1. If you don’t understand a word, try to use contextual clues to identify the meaning of the word. If that fails, look it up in a dictionary and write down the word in a journal so you can eventually add this word to your vocabulary.

2. Underline key information and take notes.

3. Read a variety of material: magazines, online articles, books…

4. Read in a quiet location.

5. Read carefully and actively.

6. Reflect on the material: When you talk with classmates, share what you have read and have a discussion about the topic. Get other people’s opinions. Make reading a dynamic experience!
